A real guide from someone who went in December
Just walk. Every single city Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Innsbruck reveals itself when you stop planning and start wandering. The best moments weren't on any itinerary. They were random streets, unexpected views, a warm café you ducked into because it was freezing outside. Build in time to do nothing, and you'll come back with everything.
Visit stores on the 24th, not the 25th. On Christmas Day, almost everything is closed — markets, shops, half the restaurants. Christmas Eve is the main event in Austria. That's when the markets are alive, the streets are buzzing, and the mulled wine is flowing. Plan your market evenings around the 24th.
One more thing: it will be colder than you think. Not "a bit chilly" cold. Properly, bone-deep cold. Pack thermals, proper winter boots, wool gloves, and a scarf you can actually wrap around your face. Don't underpack on layers.

Vienna at Christmas is exactly what you imagined Europe would look like as a kid. Baroque palaces, chandeliers strung across cobblestone streets, mulled wine in gloved hands, church bells echoing off stone walls. It delivers. Completely.
The Christmas markets here are genuinely world-class — and one thing that surprised us: vegan food options at the markets were everywhere. Käsespätzle, roasted chestnuts, potato pancakes, soups — there's so much to eat even if you don't eat meat. You won't go hungry.
